Sustainably Styled Eco-FashionGreenSewn is an eco fashion design company that creates unique eco-chic one of a kind scarves by recycling old vintage saris. If you don't know what a sari is, it's a long (usually 15 feet or more) garment worn by women in India. Our recycled vintage sari scarves are colorful, intricately patterned, and sometimes have intricate gold "zari" work hand woven into the borders. We collect the softest and prettiest old saris and lovingly recycle them into luxurious, authentic, ultra limited edition and gloriously colorful green fashion creations that are both sexy and sustainable. Check out the slideshow to learn more about our process.
WhoGreenSewn was started by Dan Shir, a 25 year shoe industry veteran based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Wanting to produce something more green and meaningful, Dan and his longtime agent in India started GreenSewn. Production is done at our workshop near New Delhi, using locally sourced hand-selected vintage saris.

GreenSewn Process: 1Our process starts with Vintage Sari collection. 'Sari Wallah' women go from house to house, bartering for worthy old Saris. GreenSewn Process: 2We select only the prettiest and softest Silk Saris. We check softness by hand and by holding a tiny corner of a Sari to a flame we reveal whether it's truly silk. GreenSewn Process: 5Now we need to sort by color, which can be tricky because each Sari contains many colors. We classify by what we consider the 'dominant' color in the Sari. GreenSewn Process: 6Old Saris are delicate and must be washed gently by hand. We clean them using a totally organic mixture of water and soapnuts, the dried fruit of the soapberry tree. GreenSewn Process: 7Soapnuts are natural, organically grown, and bio-degradable fruit of the tree "Sapindus Mukorossi." When added to water they release Saponin, a gentle natural cleanser. GreenSewn Process: 9Now manufacturing can start. A typical Sari is around 16 feet long by 42 inches wide, with lovely intricate borders and a fancy end called a 'Pallu'. GreenSewn Process: 11Strips are stitched together in various color combinations and any loose threads trimmed. |
